iDE India began in 1991 as an iDE country program focused on the mass marketing of treadle pumps in East India. Since then, it has ensured the adoption of more than 750,000 treadle pumps by Indian smallholders farm families. Because of that success, in 2003 iDE India became an independent Indian not-for-profit enterprise committed to providing long-term solutions to poverty, hunger and malnutrition.
iDE India is the primary implementing partner of IDE's "Micro Irrigation for Indian Smallholders" project which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Proximity Design (formerly iDE Myanmar)
iDE Myanmar was launched as an iDE country program in 2004, and fast became one of the leading international non-governmental organizations in Myanmar. In 2008, iDE Myanmar officially became an independent organization named Proximity Design, maintaining collaborative relations within the iDE Group. Proximity Design implements the Myanmar component of iDE's Rural Prosperity Initiative (RPI).
Proximity Design focuses its efforts on rural small farm households earning less than $2/day living in the most densely populated areas in both lower and upper Myanmar. 70 percent of Myanmar's 36 million poor live in rural areas and earn their income from small-plot agriculture.
