FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)
- Where does IDE's support come from?
IDE is a non-profit organization and, as such, depends on grants and donations to conduct all field operations.
Donor funds are used to create pro-poor market environments, "setting the stage" for the private sector to take over and continue delivering sustainable benefits to the rural poor.
By taking advantage of market forces, IDE is able to have far-reaching and long-lasting impacts using modest resources.
Since IDE's inception, every donor dollar invested in the development of pro-poor markets has resulted in more than $50 of net additional income generated by smallholders.
IDE is an international nonprofit with several ways to honor donations. Donors may receive recognition from IDE or one of its affiliated national organizations (IDE Canada, IDE UK and IDE USA).
UK taxpayers may donate for tax exempt receipt by donating through the IDE UK online donation system. Click Here for More Information.
All others can donate on this website. U.S. and Canadian citizens will receive a receipt for the donation to claim a tax deduction to the extent allowed by the law. As always, donors should consult their tax advisor as to the deductibility of donations.
- How does IDE USA use my personal information?

Our Life is Much Better
A case study from Zambia
More than 70% of Zambians live in poverty. With a per capita income of $395, Zambia ranks among the world’s poorest countries. Crisis-level famine and poverty are compounded by low population density and long distances between settlements, making it difficult for small farmers to access markets.
Before learning about IDE, Peter Chakanyuka, along with his wife and six children, farmed a ½ hectare plot of land. Depending upon rain for irrigation, his family could only grow maize and peanuts, with yields that were too small to sell.
